Beaver Pond at Van Dyk Spring #6715
This is along the Cecil Cove Trail, located in the Erbie area of the Buffalo National River. This is one of the few active beaver dams near the river. Most beaver live in the banks of the Buffalo River. The water of Van Dyk Spring is very mineralized and it seems to take on even more color than the Buffalo River when the light is right. In this case it looked like a sapphire.

Whitetail Buck in Buffalo River  #52639
This is one of my favorite pictures, not because the buck is so great, this is not a great animal, but because of the setting. I had staked out one of my favorite elk crossing areas hoping for a crossing and was surprised by this buck. He came off the same trail, and I got a number of shots just as the sun was beginning to illuminate the Buffalo River. This off a spur of the Buffalo River Trail between Boxley and Ponca.

Great Blue Heron Roosting on Bluff #52349
The Buffalo River is blessed with my great blue herons. When you walk the river trails, or in the river, they will generally fly away from you if you get within 100 yards of them. This particular heron got used to me walking up his particular stretch of river and he gave me some shots. It is tough to tell from this picture, but he is about 60 feet about the river level, perched on a dead cedar.

I trekked through his territory often in 2008 to get to the spot where I shot the whitetail above, and a few different elk crossings. At first he flew away, but once he patterned me, he would just perch and make that awful honk that great blue herons make. One time he flew right past me nearly at eye level about 10 yards away and I got him in flight absolutely razor sharp, nearly full frame, one of my luckiest shots of the year.

Center Point Trail Head, Ponca Wilderness  #57320
The Center Point Trail is a very popular stepping off point to access Sneed's Creek and the famous Hemmed In Hollow Falls. This was taken just past the entrance to the trail head on a perfect fall day. Morning light cutting through the trees inspired me to take the picture. This rates as one of my best fall color pictures for 2008, and it has been well received. This is a HDR.

For those unfamiliar with our area, the Ponca Wilderness is one of the finest hiking and camping areas in the Upper Buffalo River area. It has many superb hiking trails and outstanding natural features that set it apart as a destination for nature lovers. There are many waterfalls, and the Buffalo River is very scenic in this stretch.

Along the Trails . . .
The Buffalo River is home to hundreds of miles of documented hiking trails, and hundreds more that are not official. Trail pictures are unexpected, and often quite unusual. These are a nice change of pace from more planned pictures . . .
